The desk and cabinets here were made for a client's home office. Using a collaborative design process (starting with a list of  the functional elements of each piece) , we evolved a design that gave her both the work space she needed and the aesthetics she desired. Both pieces are built out of solid quartersawn white oak  with the exception of the drawer sides (red oak, maple) and the drawer bottoms (pine, poplar).

Desk - features include...
  • A pair of file cabinet drawers on the left-hand side with custom made hardware
  • A stack of multipurpose drawers on the right-hand side (ranging in size from 4 1/2" deep to 5 1/2" deep)
  • A pull-out writing surface located above the stack of small drawers
  • A "cubbie" (for storing a keyboard and mouse) in the middle/underside of the desk

Cabinet - features include...
  • Upper and lower cabinet spaces
  • Lower cubbies and mail slots
  • Lower drawers

Desk - design details include...

  • A highly-figured top combined with a more subtle grain pattern in the base to give the desk drama as well as balance
  • Reverse-tapered legs along with curves in the bottom rails of the bases to lighten up the desk and give it "lift"
  • Each frame-and-panel side of the bases features book-matched panels
  • Breadboard ends on the top of the desk

Cabinet - design details include...
  • Bookmatched panels on the frame and panel doors
  • Shiplapped poplar backs

Desk dimensions are: 28" deep x 72 5/8" long...and about 30" tall
Cabinet dimensions are: 44 1/4" tall x 36"wide x 13" deep (left and right cabinets are separate units)

All of the wood was sourced from local sawyer Scott Smith who mills and kiln dries high quality quartersawn white and red oak.

Thanks go to Dimitri Willliams of DWP for the photos of the desk.
